Blue Star Ferries
Ultra-modern ferry uses Vetrotech’s weight-saving glass solutions.
Originally founded in 1965 as Strintzis Lines, the rebranded Blue Star Ferries runs ferry services between the Greek mainland and the Aegean Islands. Blue Star Delos was built at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd (DSME) in Korea – the second largest shipbuilder in the world.
Launched in 2011, this ultra-modern ferry serves the domestic route from Piraeus to Santorini – via Paros, Naxos and Ios – offering passengers one-bed to four-bed cabins.
Although not the largest among the fleet of nine Blue Star Ferries, Blue Star Delos is capable of carrying the most passengers of all the vessels – a maximum of 2,400 people. In addition, it can carry 450 private vehicles – or 50 freight units with 150 private vehicles – at speeds reaching an impressive 26 knots.
Delivering our glass solutions via a frame manufacturer in Korea, Vetrotech supplied Blue Star Delos with several glass product combinations. We provided our fire-resistant Contraflam® double-glazed units (DGUs), together with our toughened weight-saving Stadip® Marine exterior laminated glass.
Integrated with Parsol® Green tinted glass, this combination provided a very strong, safe glass solution – one that is both fire resistant and weight saving, with the added benefit of excellent solar control properties.
We also supplied Stadip® Marine for the areas where fire-resistant glass was not required. In doing so, we were able to save more than four tons of weight compared to traditional glass.
Fire resistant glass is able to resist a fire up to 120 minutes.
